Time Travel: The Loft and Sebadoh

Posted on 21st November 202421st November 2024 by Shaun Belcher

My friends The Loft have their first LP released soon as Pete stated on facebook
It’s been a long time coming, but, 38 years after we split , we have finally recorded our debut album! 10 new songs with a limited Flexi single with a cover of Sebadoh’s Brand New Love.

You can pre-order limited edition here: https://orcd.co/the-loft

Now the mention of Sebadoh triggered some time travel of my own.

Back in 1993 I was in a ramshackle band and I and the other two members went to the gig when Sebadoh came to town. I vividly remembered it being at T&C 2 or the Garage on Holloway Road near Highbury tube it changed names a few times. I looked out my ticket and weirdly it stated it at ULU but I wasn’t wrong as the images below show.

The image of change of venue ticket I found on web and Linus were friends of friends through a band called Cat’s Paw who almost had a single on Homestead ( Sebadoh’s US label) I designed sleeve for but it never came out if can find image will post below.

The gig was great I remember the drummer being very intense. Royal Trux I didn’t like too much junkie posing a la Keith Richards and found out later not a pose and surprised they both still alive.

On a more positive note I remember Noddy Holder standing next to me in audience which made me laugh.

How does this relate to The Loft playing a sebadoh song?

Well back before The Loft imploded I went to the exact same location although then it was supposed to be an anarchist squat venture.

The Loft and the PA guy set up and pretty soon we realised that not only was there no audience but the promoter had done a runner. I think there is an image of the event but not sure and I don’t remember more than two people watching as The Loft went through their set as a useful rehearsal.

So there you go everything connects. Everything changes everything stays the same….

I went and bought Sebadoh III still have it in shrinkwrap…going to play it later.

As for that cover not heard the flexi yet but here a version by Sebadoh from 1995

Follow what you feel, you alone decide what’s real…
